Making the log cabin square is easy. It can be anywhere from one to three colors, depending on your preferences and the individual project requirements. Pinning is usually not necessary.
Remember, ALL SEAMS ARE 1/2 INCH.
The log cabin square starts with a small 5-1/2" center square. I use a 5-1/2" paper square to eyeball size before cutting.
Voila. Behold the square!
Add the first pair of strips.
Keep the strips closed...
...as you trim them.
Hold the rotary ruler firmly in place as you trim. You may have to run the razor back and forth a few times to cut through both layers.
Just flip the rotary ruler around...
...to trim the bottom.
Open the strips out, and finger press.
Add the second pair of strips...
...trim...
...open out, and finger press.
Nice and flat.
Add the third pair of strips.
Trim...
...open out...
...and finger press.
Add the fourth pair of strips...
...trim...
...open out...
...and then press (as in, on an ironing board) the entire block.
If you want a more dimensional look...
...then all seams in the log cabin square should be pressed outward, like a volcano.
If you want a flat look (which is easier to quilt)...
...press the seams open, as shown. This also gives you smaller seam bumps. (Thanks to an anonymous visitor for the tip!)
All done! Time to take a break and relax. Looks nice, doesn't it?
