Adding the Star/Sky Blocks

Back

Loose Blocks around Log Cabin Square
It's helpful to lay the star/sky blocks out around the log cabin square before you sew, so you can see exactly what goes where.

Remember, ALL SEAMS ARE 1/2 INCH.

Four Pairs Joined
Sew together the four pairs of star/sky blocks directly adjoining the log cabin square. The "star" triangles in these blocks will become the "points" of the star. The "frame" triangles in the four remaining loose blocks will become the inside corners of the frame.

Sew from Star Side to Sky Side
For the most accurate results, sew from the "star" (mostly blue) side to the "sky" (mostly black) side. Pinning is usually not necessary.

Four Pairs with Pressed Seams
These seams can be pressed to either right or left...

Detail of Pressed Seams
...but pressing to the right, as shown, will make the border seams a tad easier to sew later on.

Four Pairs Joined
At this point, you still have four loose blocks.

No Loose Blocks
Add them to the top and bottom two-block pairs as shown.

Four-Block Set, Back View
Press these seams inward toward the center seam, as shown, to maintain the star's "popout" effect.

Two Rows of Four Blocks, Two Rows of Two Blocks, around Log Cabin Block
Lay the two-block and four-block rows around the log cabin square so you can see what you're doing as you sew.

Two Rows of Two Blocks Sewn to Log Cabin Block
Sew the two-block rows to opposite sides of the log cabin center block.

Two Rows of Two Blocks Sewn to Log Cabin Block, Seam Side
These seams will naturally want to fall inwards, towards the log cabin block. Press them that way.

Two Rows of Four Blocks Sewn to Log Cabin Block
Now sew the four-block rows to the remaining open sides of the log cabin block.

Row of Four Blocks Sewn to Log Cabin Block, Seam Side
Press these seams toward the log cabin block.

Top Without Borders
All right! The top is almost done!
